Offering real-time, economic insight into rising sea levels

The uncertainty associated with future sea level projections is currently poorly represented in economic cost/benefit analysis of flood resilience measures as it requires an intensive engineering calculation process to translate the full spectrum of possible climate scenarios into economic damages.

This severely limits the potential to conduct “what if” type analysis and identify solutions which are resilient across a broad range of potential outcomes.

Arup worked with Cambridge University to produce a proof-of-concept tool, which simplifies the conventional calculation method to facilitate near real-time exploration of future scenarios.

The final output was an interactive digital interface that allowed users to test the sensitivity of the economic decision-making process to input assumptions. This work package was led by the UK National Oceanography Centre, as part of a Horizon 2020 funded research consortium.
