Predicting homes most at risk of climate induced wildfire
Arup partnered with the First Street Foundation, a non-profit research and technology group, to investigate the risk of wildfire to properties across the US. Wildfire is an important force of nature in many countries and represents a growing risk in several others due to the impacts of climate change. A cross-disciplinary global group, involving members from the US and the UK, produced a model predicting the vulnerability of structures to ignition by wildfire, which was then integrated with First Street Foundation’s wildfire hazard model, to generate a risk factor for all properties across the US. This was achieved through analysis of property data sets and first principles modelling based on experimental data.
